The Golf Grip

In order to achieve maximum distance from each club, besides proper posture and technique, you must have a golf grip that will allow both hands and arms to function as a unit, in unison. The extensor and flexor muscles of the fore-arms work the opposite of one another during the swing and it is important that one hand does not become dominate at the start of the downswing. An improper golf grip will allow this to happen without you consciously being aware of it.

How often have you noticed that you actually re-gripped just prior to the downswing? The reason this happens is because there was a gap between the hands at the top of the backswing or the hands were opposing one another rather than working as a unit, the brain/body sensed  this and the instability of the club at the top of the backswing and ordered the re-grip.

THE ONLY WAY TO HAVE THE HANDS AND ARMS WORKING AS A SINGLE UNIT FOR BENEFIT IN THE GOLF SWING IS TO MAKE SURE THAT BOTH HANDS ARE -PARALLEL- TO EACH OTHER.

Many teachers mention that the “V’s” should point to the chin and shoulder. This does not insure that the hands are parallel to one-another. In fact, the hand furthest from the target will not be parallel to the other most of the time. This actually sets up a right hand golf grip that will oppose the left hand in working as a single unit.

In order to have speed through the hitting area it is imperative to have both hands and arms are working together as a single unit (It’s duality in unity). It is important to understand that the muscles of the right and left arms work in opposite, complementing each other’s movement to give you speed in your release through the ball, this equates to the distance you are searching for.

When the hands are not parallel, you will never be able to achieve the tapping of power and speed ability of both hands and arms and the stored energy of the larger body muscles.

The optical illusion, while looking down at your hands, will make it difficult to see the angle of the second “V’s” trajectory (to the shoulder) accurately. The first “V” is okay to set to (the chin), this will give you a slightly strong golf grip.

It is much easier to see if the hands are parallel to one-another by lifting the club and hands as in the first picture. If you have a flat plane across both hands when looking at them, then your hands are parallel to each other. When you can see that the first extension of the fingers of both hands (from the palms) forms a single plane, you will have both hands parallel to one-another. Now you will be able to make use of the power and speed potential of both hands working as a single unit.

The second item that is important to achieving speed and power from the hands and arms is to snug the hands together when you take your golf grip. You do this by pulling the lower hand to the other (right for righties) and making sure that the left thumb rest in the crevice of the right thumb pad area and the palm heel. This action also allows you to grip the club with the proper amount of pressure and keep the fore-arm muscles loose for action. You will never have to worry about gripping the club too tight or too loose again. It makes the grip pressure automatic and takes it out of the equation.

These pictures show views of a proper parallel golf grip.

Note how the left thumb rests in the crevice created by the right hand thumb and palm heel.

Grip the club with your left hand, then parallel the right to it,

all you need to do now is to slide your right hand into position for a perfect golf grip.

(At almost 62 years of age I can still power the occasional tee shot 300+ yards with 10 year old technology)
